"It goes with the curtains"
Once, my mum bought a painting (a semi figurative portrait of a lady) on a street market. Her reason was: "It goes with the curtains".
I was really upset.
I didn't understand how someone could see art as an additional decorative object for the living room. An object that had to go with the colour of the curtains.
Recently, I had buyers coming to the studio. One of them showed me the place where my painting was going to be hung and she asked me if I thought it would fit well with her pink and blue cushions.
I would like to apologise to my mum.
Even Johannes Vermeer in The Art of Painting (1666–1668) matches the curtains with the dress of his model so why not my mum or this lady?
